Programs

Here is a list of many of the programs we offer throughout the year at the Club.  For information on our Basketball, Softball, and Archery programs, please refer to those specific pages under the "Schedules" drop down menu.

We at the Club are constantly changing and evolving our programs to offer the best possible activities for your children.  Please, if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions for any of our programs, let us know.

Programs listed below are divided into two major groups:  first, team oriented activities (intramurals), and second, individual oriented activities.

Intramurals

The Club's intramural sports programs are non-competitive, recreational programs emphasizing sportsmanship and player participation regardless of a child's ability.  The Club offers a variety of intramural programs for boys and girls of all ages.  Every month there is a calendar of the Club's scheduled activities available in the main office.  These programs offer a unique and challenging platform for our members to develop physically and socially in an organized but non-competitive athletic setting.  These activities help children develop responsibility, decision making, leadership, cooperation, and confidence.

In most of our intramural programs, a league of four teams plays a sport for six weeks.  Participants are assigned to a team for the duration, and learn teamwork, sportsmanship, basic skills, and rules.  Captains are chosen and teams are formed on the first day of each sport.  Players can join the program at any time during the season.  No member will be turned away.

KEY FOR INTRAMURAL SPORTS

Co-ed

This program is played with both boys and girls.

Junior Boys, Junior Girls

These programs are for members ages 7-12, with separate programs

     for boys and girls.

Senior Boys, Senior Girls

These programs are for members ages 13 and older, with separate

     programs for boys and girls.

Intramural Junior Dodgeball-Coed

Junior dodgeball is a recreational, non competitive activity that emphasizes player participation and sportsmanship.  The game starts with a playing area divided in half, and a team defending each side.  Four to six balls are distributed between the two teams.  All players must stay in their half of the playing area while they throw balls and try to strike players on the opposing team.  Any player who is hit with a ball is out of the game.  If a player catches a ball thrown at him or her, the player who threw the ball is out of the game. The team who gets the most players out in the allotted time wins the game.  A team can also win by scoring a basket on the opposing side of the gym.  All matches are best 2 out of 3.  Dodgeball is a game that involves the gross motor skills of running, throwing, catching and dodging.  We use a soft foam "nerf" type ball for safety purposes.

Intramural Soccer- Junior Co-ed

This is an instructional league for members of all skill levels.  Participants will learn or improve the basic skills of trapping, passing, heading, dribbling, and shooting.  These games are non-competitive, and player participation will be emphasized.

Junior Volleyball is a modified, introductory activity that will teach the basic rules and fundamentals of the sport.  Individual skills such as the underhand serve, bump pass, and overhand set will be emphasized, as well as team play and sportsmanship.  Because of the age and size of the children, smaller balls and lower nets will be used to help insure the proper techniques are learned.

Senior volleyball is for members of all skill levels, and will teach the basic skills, as well as more advanced moves including the overhand serve, serve reception, spiking, and blocking.  Players will be taught the rules and strategies of the game. Play is with regulation balls and net height.

Intramural Junior Wiffleball- Co-ed

Wiffleball is a modified version of baseball played with a plastic ball and bat.  It is an instructional, recreational program that stresses player participation and sportsmanship.  Participants are taught such skills as throwing, batting, catiching, fielding, base running, and bunting.  Each paricipant will be able to identify the rules, basic strategies and safety precautions that go with playing the game.  The program will demonstrate leadership, sportsmanship and team lyalty.  Participation and having fun are a must!

Intramural Flag Football- Jr. Boys, Jr. Girls, Sr. Boys, Sr. Girls

Flag football is a modified version of football.  At the Club, minimal contact is allowed, and there is absolutely no tackling or pushing of any player.  In order to down an offensive ball carrier, the defense must simply pull off one of the two flags attached to the opposing players belt.  The rules are modified based on age groups and the facilities available.  All leagues end with the Boys and Girls Club's version of the Super Bowl.

Intramural Floor Hockey- Junior Boys, Senior Boys

Floor Hockey is a non-competitive, recreational, modified version of ice hockey.  At the Club, no checking is allowed.  Foam pucks and styrofoam padded sticks are used for safety purposes.  The floor hockey program emphasizes player participation and sportsmanship as well as learning the basic rules and skills including stick handling, passing, shooting, and defensive play.

Gym Games- Coed, All Ages

Gym games encompass a wide range of activities from relays to problem solving games, as well as preparatory skills for team sports.  These activities add great fun, variety and creativity to our after school program.  May of our gym games incorporate gross motor skills such as throwing, running, kicking, dodging, and shooting.

Our objective for gym games is to involve children in an active, meaningful and safe learning situation emphasizing the use of gross motor skills, cognitive development, social learning and cooperation.  The OBGC staff feel that gym games are an integral part of the sport skill development process.
